Insidious: The Holy Grail of Horror
When was the last time a horror film actually scared you? Lovers of horror will surely understand what I mean when you constantly look for that scare fix every time you watch a new scary movie. Horror is always the choice of film for the low budget filmmaker; look at our recent trends in the genre with films such as Paranormal Activity and Monsters. Sometimes when some serious cash is put into a horror it loses it’s fear factor when the producers go completely over the top with make up and special effects that leaves little to the imagination.
The other day I took my girlfriend along to see Insidious at the cinema. What usually when we see a scary film together is she will become terrified and I will sit there un-phased holding her hand and comforting her. Hollywood horror for a while has become too formulaic in my opinion. You can tell when there is going to be something that will make you jump around the corner simply by the rhythm of the film. I usually end up losing my attention in tinking about whether or not the old Hollywood actor they’ve roped in to the film to get the funding has had botox injections. Insidious might just be the horror I’ve been looking for. Rather than sitting there only jumping in reaction to my girlfriend grabbing my hand when she got scared I found myself gasping, even screaming, in reaction to some of the images I saw in this masterpiece. If you want to be scared witless, get along and see this movie.
